Business Cards in a Digital World

One piece of print never went away over the last two decades – The humble business card continues to be THE most important piece of printed marketing.

As all was changing, digital printers and web to print meant that the business card was available to all – quickly and at a very low cost. Business flocked to online stationery companies such as Vistaprint, Moo and Instaprint but to begin with the quality was poor with design and production values usurped by the need for speed and ‘value’. Considering what a business card is; the idea that a brand would look to devalue the impact a card can make seems odd.

The business card is usually the first point of impact for a brand and can be the most powerful tool in allowing people to know who you are and what you do. A well considered card can make a brand or individual stand out from the crowd and if you consider that on many occasions your card will not be the only one your recipient receives; this is crucial.

Money spent on design, material and production is rarely wasted and in these days of short run / high quality digital print, this higher cost will be of a negligible amount. The impact and positive pr can be immeasurable and can be, even subconsciously, the difference between winning or losing a contract
5 ways for your card to stand out…

  1. Make the layout easy on the eye – over fussy and cluttered cards make it hard to understand the content.
  2. Make sure your key information is available. Do you need a fax number? Do you even need an address? Maybe it’s time to add your linkedin page or twitter handle?
  3. Have a look at different formats. Cards don’t have to  be 55×85. Some of the most eye catching cards stand out as they are slightly smaller/bigger, have rounded corners or are very thick/very thin.
  4. Look at other printing techniques. ‘Old school’ finishing like foiling, letterpress and thermography are very much back in fashion. The ‘new school’  can include finishes applied on machine such as white ink/raised ink or off machine such as scodix or motion cutting.
  5. Seriously consider the material you are using. Most cards are produced on a standard coated or uncoated material but using a synthetic; a tinted or even a textured material can make that finger or eye linger for longer. That may be the crucial difference in being successful or an also ran.
